The Fertile Void, the Black Madonna and Personal Power
Few may be familiar with the Black Madonna- an image that emerges all throughout Europe in Catholic churches. It is not only the lack of people of that skin color in these regions that makes these stand out but their incongruence with the rest of the artwork’s representation of the Divine Mother. There are many theories as to the meaning behind these pieces of art since the racial discriminations of the modern era have certainly contributed to the loss of the symbolism or even historical record intended to be preserved here.
In order to understand the symbolism here we can look to traditions that worshipped the mysteries is of the Great Mother, like Gnosticism, a root of Christianity. Mater, and ancient word for mother is the root of the word Material. In modern times we have two main definitions of the idea of materialism- one is the lust for material objects, money etc; and the other is a view of the world that is purely material and holds no value beyond that.
The Black Madonna is said by some to represent the Great Void, Great Mystery, Great Mother that gave birth to everything. It challenges the Big Bang Theory, and instead reflects the cosmology of most ancient traditions, one that beholds not a “beginning” but a grand matrix or field that always was, and always will be. From the great void came a movement and a coalescence into dimensions and what we call reality and the MATERial realm. This is reflected in the womb of the woman, but is represented in the creative void we all possess inside us. It is the space we go to, often called imagination, where we seek a vision. It is the space of nothingness from which all somethings are born.
It is this space that a stationing retrograde Pluto in Capricorn in sextile to Jupiter Rx in Scorpio asks us to reenvision- what has the dominant paradigm told us about death, transformation and the mysteries of the universe and ourselves? What have structures, governments, organizations done to our power to create, transform and transmute? This time offers us a new perspective into power- both personal and grand in these arenas. Saturn is retrograding in Capricorn to restructure these traditions, and asks us to take responsibility for our part to play.
There have been many breakthrough potentials in this time, and the summer holds some big eclipses and opportunities for more. Venus is guiding us through the re-empowerment of the second chakra for the month- so reach into the fertile void of creation and create from your center of passion. A New Vision may require Re-Vision. And at times a New Vision may pierce like a lightning bolt. Either way- this space of “nothing” is richly fertile with the One Thing. That emptiness you feel is actually Grand Potential. From this we must Create- It is our birthright, and no one else can do it for us.
Blessings and Stardust,
